Mudgee Region has a population of 22000 (The main towns populations are Mudgee 8700. Gulgong 3000. Kandos 1300. Rylstone 600) and is located 261 kilometres North-West of Sydney. Mudgee can be reached by car, coach or plane.

Fossicking
The Mudgee / Gulgong region played an important part in the golden history of the Central West and fossicking is a pastime which is still enjoyed by many today. Fossickers are no longer required to obtain a licence and may fossick on any land, as long as permission is obtained from the appropriate landowners.

Some popular fossicking areas include Hill End, Hargraves (39 kilometres from Mudgee on the Hill End road), Tambaroora (67 kilometres from Mudgee on the Hill End road), Gulgong, and Windeyer (37 kilometres from Mudgee on the Windeyer road). Goulburn River National Park
This park is located between Wollar and Sandy Hollow on a gravel road. There are no formal campsites but several ideal bush-camping spots provide the visitor with secluded, inexpensive, recreational potential.

The river is the main feature of the park, with its' wide sandy banks offering easy walking. There are many interesting sandstone caves in the cliffs lining the banks of the river. In spring and late winter there is an abundant display of wildflowers, providing magnificent phot opportunities.

For the bushwalker, the trails that lead through the area are mostly well-marked and suitable for easy travel. However, the National Parks and Wildlife service recommend that you carry a small supply of drinking water on any walks.

History
Both Mudgee and Gulgong have extensive historical collections in either the Colonial Inn Museum (Mudgee) or Gulgong Pioneer Museum. The Eurunderee school contains displays relating to 3 school periods 1876, 1900 and 1970 (see What's On and When for inspection times). There are several historic villages within easy drive of Mudgee or Gulgong.

Windemere Dam
24 kilometres from Mudgee towards Sydney. Situated on the Cudgegong River and set amongst rolling green hills, the Dam is a popular spot for fishing, sailing, swimming, canoeing and boating. Camping is permitted at the Cudgegong Waters Park and there are picnic and barbeque facilities. A lookout is situated near the Dam wall.

Wine
Wine has been made in Mudgee for 160 years. The winemakers are proud of their distinctive wines. The Mudgee Wine Festival, celebrated each year in September, is the premier event in the district with many varied activities. Outdoor eating in the lovely spring sunshine is a feature of the festival as are arts and craft exhibitions, concerts, bush dances, flea markets, a wine show, displays and loads of music of all sorts.
